Eighty-five percent of U.S. adults feel it’s important to have independent living, memory care, and assisted living communities in their town or close to where they reside, according to a recent AARP survey. The survey included 1,947 adults, aged 18 years and older. Although the group of participants was somewhat small, the survey still produced some interesting results regarding the level of importance most adults place on having senior living communities in their cities and towns.

When asked to rate how essential it is to live within close proximity of an independent living, memory care, or assisted living community , 28 percent of adults surveyed said that having such communities nearby was “extremely important” to them. Thirty-two percent stated it was “very important”, and 25 percent said it was “somewhat important.” One percent of the adults surveyed stated that they currently reside in a senior living community.

Interestingly, having a senior living community close by was equally as important to all participants, regardless of their age. The percentage of participants supporting senior living communities stayed strong across the board, even when considering participants 18 to 49 years of age.

While 77 percent of surveyed adults aged 50 and older stated they would prefer to live in their homes as long as possible, only 59 percent anticipated that they would be able to do so. Adults want independent and assisted living communities near them because they want to remain close to family and friends without having to worry about house maintenance, preparing meals, laundry, or other chores. A safe environment that vanquishes loneliness, provides mental and physical stimulation, and improves one’s overall well-being are all motivating factors for wanting an independent or assisted living community nearby.
